GC SUNS join Animal Welfare League Queensland for BIG adoption campaign

The Gold Coast SUNS are thrilled to join Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) for a heart-warming campaign to raise awareness about big dogs in shelters.

The SUNS welcomed furry visitors, Franky and Raya, to the Austworld Centre on Tuesday morning to inject some fun into preparations for Saturday’s AFLW Round 1 clash at People First Stadium and promote the benefits of rescuing or fostering a big dog.

At the moment, AWLQ is inundated with medium to large sized dogs and are hoping the campaign will inspire people to consider the many positives of owning a big dog.

SUNS midfielder and big dog owner Maddy Brancatisano says there’s nothing like the larger-than-life love from her Labrador, Hank.

“I think everyone had an extra big smile coming off the track this morning and meeting Franky and Raya,” Brancatisano said.

“As an owner of a big dog, I couldn’t recommend having one more. Hank is not even two years old and probably weighs close to 50kg, but he’s a big, friendly giant.

“Every time you come home, he’s excited to see you. No matter what kind of day you’ve had, it always makes it easier coming home to him.”

AWLQ Marketing and Communications Manager, Caroline Esera says the love between SUNS players and their furry friends was heartwarming.

“It was beautiful to see the pure enjoyment and affection between our dogs and the Gold Coast SUNS players this morning,” Esera said.

“Big dogs have just as much love to give as smaller dogs, and right now, we have so many very loving big dogs waiting patiently for their forever homes.

“Larger dogs often face much longer waits for adoption and it’s tough on them. By choosing to adopt, you are saving a big dog’s life – but you’re also saving the next dog you help make room for.

“If people can’t adopt, making a donation or fostering are the best ways you can help support the animals in our care.”

Anyone who chooses to adopt during the campaign will receive a complimentary Big Dog adoption pack thanks to AWLQ’s partners, complete with an Active Dog big dog harness or collar and lead, a Savour Life food pack, training and behavioural support videos and a 21-day cooling off period.
