Animal Welfare League Queensland joins Homeless Connect to help people and their pets

Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) is thrilled to be involved again in this year’s Homeless Connect event on Wednesday the 7th of August at People First Stadium, Carrara.

Gold Coast Homeless Connect is a one-day event for people experiencing homelessness, or those at risk of homelessness. They can enjoy free entertainment, facilities and meals and access a range of services, as well as clothing, food, footwear and toiletries.

Last year, AWLQ’s Vet Team provided treatment and care for more than 50 dogs. This event is an important part of Animal Welfare League Queensland’s commitment to the care and treatment of companion animals in South East Queensland. With the cost of living and current housing crisis, AWLQ expects the need within our community to be heightened this year.

“A homeless person’s companion animal can be the most important, reliable friend in their lives. We have even seen situations where people will live in their car before giving up their dog when they cannot find affordable rental accommodation that will allow them to have their dog with them.”

“AWLQ is committed to ensuring that these best friends are vaccinated, microchipped, wormed, given food and bedding, with an offer of free desexing vouchers to their owners,” said AWLQ Marketing and Communications Manager, Caroline Esera.

AWLQ is calling on the kindness of the public to help with donations to cover some of the costs of the supplies. Anyone who wishes to make a donation to help provide veterinary care and food to a homeless person’s pet can donate here.

At the event, AWLQ will provide:

  • FREE pet health checks
  • FREE vaccinations
  • FREE microchipping
  • FREE preventative treatments
  • FREE pet supplies e.g. food, bedding, collars, leads, bowls
  • FREE desexing Vouchers

The event will commence at 8am and conclude at 2pm
